Modular construction ensures urgently-needed new homes are delivered – despite the storms

Housing developer SG Modular has weathered the storms to deliver urgently needed family accommodation in Galway – using modern methods of construction.

Despite the impact of storms Atiyah, Brendan, Ciara and Dennis, the 15 homes and family interface unit have been delivered and installed at Westside in Galway City through SG Modular’s contract with the Irish Housing Agency Framework.

The homes have been created using modular systems; they were manufactured offsite and delivered to Westside, where groundworks and preparation had been completed in advance. Thanks to the advanced modular technology, the new homes were constructed within seven hours of arriving on site.

Stephen McQueenie, CEO of SG Modular, said: ‘We are now entering the final stages of this foundational delivery to Galway City Council and the Irish Housing Agency. Modular technology has been used widely across mainland Europe but is still in its infancy in Ireland. This project with Galway City Council shows real foresight and understanding of the benefits of modular construction by both organisations.

‘Additionally, as a manufacturer, we were fortunate to find the right construction partner in Brian Conneely and Co – a critical element in delivering this project. Thanks to Brian and his team for seeing the potential in SG Conneely MMC Limited.’

SG Modular delivers the very latest modular technology, safe and quality homes using its Modular Advanced Kits Systems, MAKS, with a focus is on space, quality and safety. Careful attention has been spent on ensuring green space and landscaping to create a safe and contemporary development which meets the needs of the families who will live there.

Mr McQueenie added: ‘This is a pilot development of new homes for families who desperately need space and security to live their lives. Modular homes will play a significant role in creating secure home environments where families and communities can flourish. Using modern methods of construction we can deliver low energy units, bright living spaces and houses that are homes to the families that will live there. This is a basic human right and one that we have worked hard to achieve with the council team who have been involved in every step of the design process.’
